HDR for Prostate Cancer Treatment

Overview
There are several treatments for prostate cancer, and patients are always looking for the safest and most effective. High-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy is a form of treatment that doctors may choose over other types.
-
Identification
HDR is an internal radiation treatment. Small catheters are placed in and around the tumor and send doses of radiation to the prostate.
-
Function
The radiation is concentrated on the cancer tissue rather than in its general area. This means the targeted area is more effectively treated while not damaging surrounding normal tissue.
-
Features
A computer is able to accurately control how much radiation is sent into the tumor as well as its duration. Nothing is left behind that can be harmful to the patient.
-
Time Frame
According to Cancer Treatment Centers of America, the process of HDR takes approximately two days. This is an advantage over radiation therapy, which can take five to seven weeks.
-
Effects
Side effects from normal radiation therapy can be avoided. These include damage to surrounding healthy tissue, such as in the urethra and rectal passage, as well as skin irritation and burning at the site of radiation.
