Hair Loss & Regrow Cure

by Marisa Serafini
  • Overview

Hair loss and bald spots can happen to anyone and hardly anyone is happy about it. Menopause, genetics, pregnancy, improper hair care, stress and poor diet can all cause hair to fall out. Among the most effective hair loss remedies are Nizoral, minoxidil, finasteride and hair transplant surgery.
  • Nizoral

Many hair loss specialists recommend a specialized shampoo called Nizoral for people experiencing hair loss. The main ingredient in this shampoo is ketoconazole, which works by blocking the hair loss hormone, DHT. Nizoral can be effective at reducing or reversing hair loss, but it is usually prescribed as a complementary treatment. Hair loss treatment can be very successful when Nizoral is combined with another treatment such as minoxidil or finasteride.

  • Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a topical treatment for people with thinning hair or bald spots. The brand name for minoxidil is Rogaine, and it is sold over-the-counter at grocery, drug and beauty stores. Results with this product vary from person to person. While some regrow almost all of the hair they lost, others notice little to no difference in their hair. However, if use is stopped, the hair is likely to begin falling out again. Minoxidil comes in two formulas, 2 percent and 5 percent. It is applied directly to the scalp twice a day and works by stimulating blood circulation to the hair follicles. If you have open sores, scabs or a sunburn on your scalp, avoid using minoxidil until the skin has healed.
  • Finasteride

Finasteride is another treatment option for hair loss and balding. The brand name of finasteride is Propecia, and it is a prescription drug to be taken orally. Like Nizoral, finasteride works by blocking the release of the hormone DHT to the scalp. Like minoxidil, the effects of finasteride vary. For many, the use of finasteride over the course of several months proves to stop and even reverse hair loss. An unfortunate fact of using finasteride is that the hair growth experienced will not last if the drug is stopped.
  • Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair transplant surgery is often the last resort for people desperate to regrow hair. This procedure can be painful and the results are not always flawless. During this surgical procedure, a skin graft or "flap" of scalp with thick hair growth is moved to an area with thinner hair. Anyone who opts for one of these procedures should know that there are risks involved and the results may not live up to expectations. As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection. With hair transplant surgery, it is possible that some of the skin grafts may not take to their new location.
