How to Have a Great Golf Swing

  • Overview

The perfect golf swing is one of the most sought after skills in sports. A perfect swing is a combination of many factors all happening in sync. Although it might seem daunting, anyone can master the perfect golf swing with enough practice.

  • Step 1

It is important to align yourself properly with the ball's destination. To do this, eye an imaginary line from the tee to the flag at the end of the hole. Firmly push the tee into the ground, and place the golf ball on top. Make sure the area in which you are teeing off is absent of any debris.
  • Step 2

Stand parallel to the imaginary line, and rest the head of your club naturally on the ground behind the ball.
  • Step 3

Grip the club with your left hand so that the shaft of the club lies across the top of your forefinger and that the end of the shaft is under the heel of your palm. Make sure the pinkie is wrapped around the base of the club tightly so that the club has no room to move. Place your thumb downward in a straight line with the shaft.
  • Step 4

Place your right hand on the club so that the heel of your right palm is over the thumb of your left hand. Place your right thumb around the club at a slight angle so that your right shoulder and right thumb are pointing in the same direction. Place the pinkie of your right hand between the middle finger and index finger of your left hand.
  • Step 5

With your body still parallel to the imaginary line leading to the flag, stand with your feet apart, roughly the width of your shoulders. The right foot should be perpendicular to the imaginary line, while the left foot should be slightly open, allowing it to pivot easier. With your knees slightly bent, bend forward from the waist, allowing your arms to hang naturally downward, keeping the weight of your body on the balls of your feet.
  • Step 6

To swing, rotate your hips, arms, hands and torso backward so that your back faces the flag and the club is behind your head, pointing to the flag. Your weight should shift to the inside of your right foot. Rotate the body in a fluid, powerful motion, shifting your weight to the left foot. When the club makes contact with the ball, your hips and shoulders should be parallel to the ball.
  • Step 7

Keep rotating until your whole body is facing the flag, and the club is diagonal across your back from the left shoulder to the right ribs. The swing should be fluid from beginning to end. To increase the power of your swing, simply rotate your body faster.
