How to Find a Good Restaurant In Newport, Rhode Island

by Mike Virgintino
  • Overview

Newport, Rhode Island, is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the northeast. It is very busy during the summer and it draws crowds most of the rest of the year, including over the Christmas and New Year's holidays. The restaurants are some of the best in New England. During peak times, reservations are necessary and wait times can be long.

  • Step 1

Determine the cuisine and the atmosphere you desire. While seafood and waterfront dining are the most popular in this town, great places also can be found several blocks inland. For a historic experience, dine at the White Horse Tavern (1673) at the corner of Marlborough and Farewell Streets. Located in a residential part of town, it is the oldest continuously operating tavern in America.
  • Step 2

Check out the state's tourist websites before you go (see Resources). Several list the great places to eat, how to experience the water and the many other attractions that the entire family can enjoy. A popular family place is the Red Parrot on Thames Street and America's Cup Avenue. It features everyday fare along with fajitas, salads and a kid's menu.
  • Step 3

Spend time at the visitor's center. They have a number of tourist books that highlight restaurants in the area and they have discount offers for many of them. Located on America's Cup Avenue as you enter town, the hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day (closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day).
  • Step 4

Cruise the wharf area. You will be able to browse the shops as you check out the menus. Several restaurants have bars and/or outdoor areas to throw one back (a drink or a raw clam). One of the most famous restaurants is The Black Pearl on Bannister's Wharf. The New England clam chowder and mussels are popular.
  • Step 5

Get out of town. There are many other fine restaurants within 30 minutes of Newport. Evelyn's in Tiverton is known for Rhode Island chowder, clam cakes and lobster chow mien. Popular for years with the locals, the secret got out when it was featured on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives."
