Golf Courses Near Davie, Florida

by Kim Kleinle
  • Located in the Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area, Davie, Fla., is home to the Grande Oaks Golf Club, where portions of the movie "Caddyshack" was filmed (named Rolling Hills in those days). You won't be able to play this private course, but you can get a peek if you take a lesson at the Grande Oaks Golf Academy, which is open to the public. The handful of other golf courses in the town are also private, but a drive of less than 10 miles provides public options.
  • Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racquet Club

Just three miles from Davie, the Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racquet Club offers affordable golf, with prices ranging from $35 to $55 for green fees and GPS-equipped carts, as of March 2010. Owned by the city of Pembroke Pines, the club underwent a $7 million renovation in 2007 that included a new drainage system and new lakes on three of the holes. Water now comes into play on 13 of the 18 holes, and the narrow fairways add to the challenge, particularly from the back tees, which carry a course rating of 73.3 and a slope of 140. Pembroke Lakes has five sets of tees ranging from 5,160 to 6,815 yards. Golfers can work on their games day and night at the lighted driving range, with an all-grass teeing ground. • The Club at Emerald Hills

A perennial choice on Golf Digest's "Places to Play" list since 1992, the Club at Emerald Hills is four miles from Davie. Emerald Hills has served as host to the PGA Tour's Doral and Honda Open qualifiers and the U.S. Open qualifier, among others. The course lures golfers with its wide landing areas on most holes, but the fairway and approach shots challenge them with water on 12 holes and fast, undulating and well-bunkered greens. Waste bunkers and native grasses further define the fairways. Moderately priced at $60 to $75, as of March 2010, the course offers six sets of tees ranging from 4,939 to 7,274 yards. The back tees are rated at 76.1 with a slope of 145 . The Club at Emerald Hills 4100 North Hills Drive Hollywood, FL 33021-2424 954-962-7888 theclubatemeraldhills.com
  • Jacaranda Golf Club

Jacarand Golf Club, located six miles from Davie, has two 18-hole courses. Like Emerald Hills, the East has been host to the U.S. Open qualifying, as well as the PGA Tour Qualifying School. Its back tees measure 7,245 yards, with a course rating of 75.5 and a slope of 133, but golfers who aren't qualifying for tournaments have four additional sets of tees from which to choose, starting at a reasonable 4,923 yards. The West course isn't as long as the East--the back tees measure 6,778 yards--but it requires precise shot-making, with lagoons, doglegs and tight landing areas. The five sets of tees start at 5,026 yards; the back tees have a course rating of 72.8 and a slope of 130. Golf fees with cart range from $69 to $124, with twilight discounts, as of March 2010. • Grand Palms Resort

With a thousand palm trees on its 27 holes, Grand Palms Resort lives up to its name. Golfers need travel only seven miles from Davie for a round at Grand Palms. The resort mixes its Grand, Royal and Sabal nines to offer three 18-hole combinations. Water predominates, but the courses are playable for the average golfer, with lay-up options to avoid the hazards and few forced carries. Five sets of tees range from 5,084 to 6,881 yards, so golfers of all abilities can find the appropriate challenge, and the GPS-equipped carts help with club selection. The back tees of the Grand/Royal course--the most difficult combination of nines, is rated 73.6/152.
