German Pinscher Ear Infections

by Jelena Woehr
  • Overview

Most German Pinschers have upright ears, making them less prone to ear infections than dogs with drop ears. However, any dog can suffer from acute or chronic ear infections. Most ear infections in German Pinscher dogs can be treated with antibiotics and proper hygiene.
  • Symptoms

A dog with an ear infection may shake his head and scratch his ears often. The ears may appear red and irritated, with a yellow or black discharge in severe cases.

  • Types

The most common type of ear infection in dogs, including German Pinschers, is otitis externa, the infection of the outer ear. Otitis media, an infection of the middle ear, is also frequently diagnosed in dogs.
  • Diagnosis

If your dog shows signs of an ear infection, she should visit a veterinarian as soon as possible. The veterinarian will use a special scope to examine the ear and may take X-rays or perform lab work using samples taken from the infected ear.
  • Treatment

Most outer ear infections and mild to moderate middle ear infections can be treated with antibiotics and careful cleaning of the infected area. Severe middle ear infections may require surgery.
  • Warning

Dogs with infected ears often experience intense discomfort when medication is applied to the ear. If your dog growls or snaps when you medicate him as directed by your veterinarian, consider using a basket muzzle to protect yourself. Even the gentlest family dog may bite when in pain.
