Funky Hair Colors & Styles

  • Overview

Your hair serves as the frame for your face, and some people like their frames bold and funky; bright colors and unusual haircuts certainly make a fashion statement. Combine the two if you dare, but know that you will be the center of attention.
  • Mohawk

This classic style sports a column of hair from the forehead down the scalp to the nape of the neck. Shave the sides or keep them very short. To make this especially colorful, dye the column a different color than the sides. This looks very cool even when it's not forced away from the head. For a shorter "faux hawk," flatten the sides with hair products and push the top toward the middle and up. This is less hard-core and hardly authentic.

  • Spikes or Crimps

Spiking your hair entails creating spikes all over the head. They can be long or short, wide or narrow, but this look is especially eye-catching when they are long. Or, you can crimp. To do so, procure a crimping iron or a flat iron with crimping plates, then divide your hair into sections and crimp down the length of the hair shaft. You can crimp all your hair or just certain sections.
  • Angular Cuts or No Hair at All

Straight, angular cuts are also funky, especially when cut on an extreme slant. This type of style works best if your hair is naturally straight. Or, eschew hair completely and shave it all off. For some, baldness happens unwillingly over the course of a lifetime, but many decide to take the plunge and do it just for fun. Keep the skin on your head looking healthy with lotion or special waxes.
  • Bright Colors

Sometimes color is the best way to go. Some funky dye colors include acid orange, brilliant blue, apple green or turquoise. Or, brighten your hair with lots of colors. Natural blonds will have more success with sectioning hair into lots of colors because their hair is light to begin with. Darker colors such as dark red or deep purple will show up better on a natural brunette without bleaching first. Streaks are also fun.
  • More Natural Colors

Some colors closer to natural tones but still bold and funky are platinum or palest blond, jet black, certain reds or a combination thereof. If your goal is attention due to your beauty and not just attention in general, use bleach or henna sparingly---depending how dark your hair is to begin with, you could end up with an unattractive orange that may clash with your skin tone.
  • Considerations

Hair becomes damaged more quickly when it's processed, so with extreme looks, keeping your hair healthy is very important. When dyeing your hair, keep it smooth, silky and soft with a leave-in conditioner. A funky hair color is eye-catching in a good way, while dry and crispy tresses are eye-catching in a bad way. Also, some people are allergic to bleach, which can cause itchy sores to develop on the scalp.
