Overview
According to the American Heart Association, high cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for heart disease. One way you can control high cholesterol is to eat the right foods. Mayo Clinic lists five foods that can help lower your cholesterol and protect your heart.
-
Oats and Bran
Oatmeal and oat bran contain soluble fiber, which reduces LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. Soluble fiber can also be found in kidney beans, apples, pears, psyllium, barley and prunes.
-
Nuts
Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans and pistachios have also been shown to significantly lower cholesterol. Almost any kind of nut will be beneficial to your diet, although it is highly recommended that they be eaten in moderation as they are also high in calories.
-
Fish
Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which not only will help lower cholesterol but can also reduce blood pressure and the risk of blood clots. Mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon have the highest levels of omega-3.
-
Olive Oil
Olive oil contains powerful antioxidants that can lower your LDL cholesterol. Sautéed vegetables, marinades and dressings are ways to add olive oil to your everyday diet. Extra-virgin olive oil has been shown to have the most beneficial effects, but stay away from "light" olive oil.
-
Plant Sterols
Sterols or stanols are found in plants and help block the absorption of cholesterol. Look for margarines, orange juices and yogurt drinks that are fortified with sterols.
-
Avoid
You should avoid foods that are high in saturated and trans fats. Both types of fat can increase your overall cholesterol levels.
