If you are like most toy dog owners, you recognize the special needs of your little dog. After all, it seems strange that you would use the same flea control on your mastiff that you would use on your yorkie. Always consult your veterinarian before giving your toy dog any medication and always follow the directions.
  • Topical

Your vet will likely give you a topical ointment like Frontline, Advantage or Revolution. Your vet will provide you with the correct formula to meet your toy dog's weight.

  • Oral

Oral flea medications come in two types. One is a monthly pill used to prevent fleas, like Comfortis or Sentinel. The other is a pill, like Capstar, that you give your dog when fleas are already present.
  • Flea Collar

Flea collars offer some protection against fleas, but they are not as effective as the other options. You can get a conventional flea collar at your local grocery or pet store, or you can use a natural flea collar containing citronella, which you can find at specialty pet stores or online.
  • Natural

If you do not want to expose your pets or your family members to harsh chemicals, use natural and non-toxic methods to control fleas like food-grade diatomaceous earth (do not use the type for pool filters) or essential oils.
  • Prevention

The most important thing you can do to prevent fleas is keep your dog healthy, because fleas are parasites that thrive on dogs with unhealthy immune systems. Feed a high quality diet, provide ample amounts of exercise, keep your house and the pet's sleeping area clean and make regular wellness visits to the vet.
