How to Fix the NT File System Install CD

Overview
Compact discs and DVDs are the most common installation media for Windows workstation and server operating systems. Windows operating systems are all available on CDs or DVDs, but a damaged disc can make the installation fail or become corrupt. Check the readable face of the disk to ensure there is no visible damage before attempting to install the operating system; if it is damaged, the computer may run poorly if the installation completes. There are a few actions to try if your Windows install disc does not work properly.

Step 1
Check the CD for damage including scratches or fingerprints on the readable side. Clean the CD with a CD Cleaning Kit, or just spray it with some glass cleaner and wipe the CD surface with a soft cloth. Wipe the surface in straight lines from the center out to the edge.
-
Step 2
Use a Drive Cleaning Disc to clear any dust from the drive's read eye. Insert the disc in the drive, and let the brushes wipe the read eye for several minutes.
-
Step 3
Try the CD in a different drive to ensure there is not a problem with the CD drive in the computer. Replace the CD drive itself if the CD works fine in the second drive.
-
Step 4
Copy the entire installation CD to a new disc. Use a CD recovery utility such as DiskInternals or RecoverDisk to copy the files from the CD if it will not copy without errors, then burn the entire contents of the recovered disc to a new CD.

- If the CD is unreadable after repeated attempts to clean it, try a different installation CD. As long as you have the key for the operating system you own, you can install that version from any CD that contains the same version of Windows.

- Use soft cloths to clean any CD or DVD. A sock works well if it's clean and soft.
Use non-abrasive cleaners made for glass or buy cleaners made for data discs.
