Overview
Fibromyalgia is a chronic and debilitating syndrome that affects the muscles, tendons and fibrous tissue. According to the Mayo Clinic, fibromyalgia occurs in about 2 percent of the U.S. population.

Causes
There is no known cause for fibromyalgia, but doctors believe a combination of factors may play a role. Genetics, infections and physical or emotional trauma are the most common factors associated with fibromyalgia syndrome.

Genetics
Fibromyalgia is often found in families. Some researchers believe the syndrome my be hereditary.

Infections
Patients with fibromyalgia report that their symptoms worsen when they have an infection or suffer from a cold or flu.

Physical/Emotional Trauma
According to the Mayo Clinic, post-traumatic stress disorder has been seen in many sufferers of fibromyalgia.

Risk Factors
Risk factors of fibromyalgia may include age, sex, sleep patterns, family history and rheumatic disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, women are much more likely to develop the disorder than men, and the risk of fibromyalgia increases with age.
