How to Find a Fax Number on a Fax Line

  • Overview

Imagine this: An important client wants to fax you a document that could mean a great deal to your business. You have a fax machine and you know it works, but thanks to email, you haven't used it very much. So you're left with one very big problem. You don't know the fax number. The client is waiting. The clock is ticking. Well, you can relax because finding the fax number for the fax line is not a difficult task at all. Here's how to do it.
  • Finding The Fax Number on a Fax Line

  • Step 1

Make sure the fax machine is plugged in and is receiving a dial signal. You can determine that your fax line is receiving a dial tone by dialing "1" and attempting to send a fax. If you cannot hear a dial tone, plug a telephone into the cable to determine if there is a dial tone. If there is no dial tone, contact your phone service provider.
  • Step 2

Ensure the fax machine is ready to send an outgoing fax. Most fax machines can function as both phone and fax machine. Some models require you to manually switch back and forth between the two functions.
  • Step 3

Dial the phone number of a phone with caller ID capability. A mobile phone or land-line phone will work equally well. Both will display the phone number of the incoming call.
  • Step 4

Write down the phone number that appears on the caller ID screen. This is the number assigned to the fax machine.
  • Step 5

Label the fax machine with the fax number. A very professional way to do this is using a label making machine. You can also write or print the number onto a piece of paper and adhere it to the fax machine using clear, cellophane tape. An even simpler way to accomplish this is to place a piece of cellophane tape on the fax machine and write on the tape with a permanent marker.

  • If your phone and fax machine share the same number, it's a good idea to make note of this on or near the fax machine. If your fax machine does not give you the option of manually switching the fax machine and phone functionality, you should unplug the phone cable from the fax machine until it is needed or turn the fax machine off.
