Overview
Music has evolved over the years to become a huge industry with a wide array of career opportunities that one can excel in. To truly excel in a music career, though, there are some major aspects a person must ensure they are willing to survey and complete. With sacrifice and hard work, you will be able to excel in a music career of your choice.
How to Excel in a Music Career

Step 1
Qualify in order to quantify. Even as a vocal artist or musician, it is better to back up some of your talent with skill and qualifications. For some this may mean taking college courses in their appropriate musical field, especially if it involves the production side of music. For others, like musicians and singers who cannot afford college, involving yourself in church or school choirs or bands will build your experience.
-
Step 2
Perfect your craft. To truly excel in the music field it will not be good enough to be average. Make a consistent effort to become better at what you do through practice and study. If you are a musician, practicing everyday is essential to master your craft. For those who produce, knowing nearly everything there is to know about your equipment and tools about to hit the market will leave you well versed when it is time to put your skills to work.
-
Step 3
Network with others to promote and propel yourself further in the music field. If you think that you will be able to excel in the music field on your own these days, then think again. Every part of the musical field is connected to another like a web, and making friends and contacts that can help you along the way is important. Try not to burn bridges by being too cocky or feeling a sense of entitlement no matter how good you may have become. Keep a cell phone, PDA or pen and paper on you at all times to acquire contact information; you never know when you might bump into someone who will be of use in your career.
-
Step 4
Create your own opportunities. Persistence is the name of the game when it comes to excelling in a music career. After you have prepared yourself and are sure your skills are at a proficient level, then it is time to step out and shop your talent. Putting your name out through self-promotion, booking gigs or getting an entry-level job that will allow you to move up on performance is optimal. Remember however that your attitude will determine your aptitude, take responsibility for your work and be the first to volunteer to do more without being asked.
-
Step 5
Take your best shot. Cracking under pressure will be considered an amateur move to those who can help advance your career. When a rare chance comes along, it is no longer time to prepare, but rather time to show off your skills. If you plan on excelling in the performance side of music, then it is especially important to gain as much performance experience as possible to rid yourself of nervous vibes that will inhibit your best performance.

- To excel in anything, it often means denying yourself of some aspects of a normal life. Sacrifice is not uncommon when your goal is to be better to average. Strong self-motivation, restraint and having a goal-oriented attitude will be necessary to get you through times when you may feel like you are missing out.
