Etiquette for Save the Date
Save the date cards are used to inform guests of an event in advance of a formal invitation being sent. They're generally sent out at least 4 to 6 months before an event, such as wedding, according to WeddingBasics.com.
-
Function
Save the date cards are used to give guests a heads up about any upcoming event. Essentially they are a request that the guests keep the date open to attend.
-
Types
Save the date cards can come in many forms, from a formal card in an envelope or a post card. Many wedding save the date cards aren't cards at all, but instead engaged couples choose to send magnets or matchbooks to ask their guests to hold their wedding date.
-
Sending
When sending a save the date, include as much information as you know, such as the date and place of the event. Include the words "invitation to follow" so the guests will know more information is coming.
-
Guest List
Only send save the date cards to those you will be inviting to the event. It's acceptable to send an invitation to someone who didn't receive a save the date, but it's unacceptable to send someone a save the date and not send that person an invitation.
-
Responding
Because a save the date card is informal, no response is needed. However, once the invitation to the event has been sent, etiquette requires a response to let the host know if you're coming.
