How to Entertain Young Children in the Fall

1Fall is a wonderful season for young children because it’s usually still warm enough for outdoor activities without having to suffer through the scorching summer heat. Here are a few tips for occupying them before you get cooped up during the winter months.Blank paper

    Rake leaves! Young children will love helping you gather the leaves into a pile, and you can usually find child-size rakes at the toy store. When you’re finished raking leaves, you can create large piles for them to jump into.Go on leaf hunts. Encourage the children to find as many different leaves as they can, and compare the different size and different color leaves. Talk about which kind of trees the leaves fell from.Create a leaf scrapbook with the leaves from your leaf hunt. Tape the leaves onto blank pieces of paper and label them. Mark the date you found them and the type of leaves they are. When you have a few scrapbook pages, punch holes in the side of the paper, and bind them together with ribbon or yarn.Go pumpkin picking. Young children will delight in helping you pick out their favorite pumpkins and load them into a wagon. Bonus points for you if you help them pull the wagons. Fall is also a great time to pick apples, as well as raspberries, depending on where you live. Check out the local farms and orchards in your area to see what is in season. Many of these places also have corn mazes.Take a hay ride. Explore nature with the kids as you are carted along on a tractor packed with bales of hay.
Although the temperatures may not be as hot as in the summer, be sure to keep kids covered in sunscreen in the fall.
