How to Embed a Video in a Website

by Jill Marie Maier
  • Overview

Embedding videos in your website is a simple process that allows you to include tutorials, demos, speeches, music, movie clips and cartoons. Videos entertain and illustrate your point in real-time, allowing site users a broader, deeper experience than separate audio, pictures and text can provide. Videos can add professional polish, expert credibility or sheer fun to your website presentation.
  • Embedding a Video in your Website

  • Step 1

Upload your video to a website that supports it, such as YouTube or MySpace. If you are not using a video you created, open the website containing the video you want to use. A wide variety of websites share videos, including YouTube and Yahoo!Music. To find a suitable video, do a Web search using the key words for the type of video you seek.
  • Step 2

Locate the video's "embed" code. Some websites require that you open or play the video before the embed code displays. The embed code may be under the video or indicated by a clickable button labeled "share" or "link". The video's embed code will be labeled "embed," and will probably be in HTML programming language.
  • Step 3

Copy the video's embed code. Place your cursor inside the box containing the video's embed code and click. You may highlight the code by clicking and dragging, or you may select all the contents in the box by pressing the "Control" and "A" keys simultaneously, or the code may highlight automatically. Press the "Control" and "C" keys simultaneously to copy the code, or use the Edit-copy option in the toolbar at the top of your screen. If available, simply click the "copy" button next to the embed code.
  • Step 4

Open the website you want the video to appear in. Go to edit mode.
  • Step 5

Paste the video's embed code into your website. Place your cursor at the point you want the video to appear and click. Use the Edit-paste option in the toolbar at the top of your screen or press the "Control" and "V" keys simultaneously. Depending on which website you are using, the embed code may appear as text or the video may appear immediately.
  • Step 6

Save changes to your website, then view it.
  • Step 7

Play the embedded video to ensure it works.

  • Save time by using computer key shortcuts like simultaneously pressing "Ctrl + C" in order to copy and "Ctrl + V" in order to paste or "Ctrl + A" in order to select all. Because videos require more memory than pictures and text, the more videos you include on your website the slower it will load. The longer the video is, the more memory it requires. Videos longer than 10 minutes may be too large for some websites to support. Videos shorter than three minutes are more likely to be viewed.

  • Do not embed videos copyrighted by other people into your website. It is illegal. Videos will not play well unless your website users have a high speed Internet connection.
