How to Eliminate Spider Veins on the Face

by Isobel Washington
  • Overview

According to the Consumer Guide for Plastic Surgery, spider veins, technically called "telangiectasias" affect roughly half of adult American women. Spider veins are tiny, branch-like red and purple bursted blood vessels that are visible at the skin's surface. When they occur on the face, they can hinder the unevenness of one's complexion, and add a red or blotchy appearance to the skin.

  • Step 1

Consult a dermatologist. A dermatologist will identify the condition for certain, and can identify its causes and implications. A dermatologist is also a good source of information regarding available treatments, and be able to cite any contraindications that may exclude some procedures as an option.
  • Step 2

Disregard sclerotherapy. While this option (an injection treatment that dissolves the veins, which diminish in appearance after the course of a few weeks to a month after the procedure) is the treatment most commonly associated with spider and varicose vein removal, it is designed to treat veins located on the legs, according to the Consumer Guide to Plastic Surgery. While it can be used on the face, sclerotherapy is easily outweighed by other treatment options.
  • Step 3

Consider the facial skin condition in its entirety. If the face exhibits other skin irregularities of color and texture, either because of age and/or sun damage, there are treatment options that can work to address other issues simultaneously, such as laser resurfacing, which addresses the entire face.
  • Step 4

Research different laser treatment types. There are a plethora of laser treatment options available, and they are all designed differently, with different targets, functions, results, and benefits. Laser treatment can be used to correct the visibility of spider veins, and simultaneously even the skin tone by correcting other discoloration. It can also be used to tighten the skin, if this is an issue identified during step 3. Laser treatment options have different side effects and varying recovery times. The John Hopkins Cosmetic Center recommends the Pulsed Dye Laser as the most effective laser for treating spider veins.
  • Step 5

Consider electrodessication. If spider veins are the only aesthetic concern, then electrodessication may be the optimal solution for reducing their appearance. In this treatment, an electric current is applied into the vein through a tiny needle. The heat of the current causes the veins to spasm and then shut down, thereby eliminating them. This process can cause discomfort, and can result in a scab, according to the Vein Removal Forum at VeinRemovalForum.com.
  • Step 6

Strictly follow after-care instructions. Once you have chosen and undergone a procedure, the doctor will give instructions that will not only help heal the treated area, but will also prevent the recurrence of spider veins.
  • Step 7

Quit smoking and drinking! Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol deprives the skin of the oxygen and nutrients it needs causing the blood vessels to rise to the surface.
