Colon cleansing claims to remove the toxin buildup in the gastrointestinal tract. Doctors usually recommend colon cleansing as preparation for certain medical procedures such as colonoscopies. Some health professionals, however, recommend it for detoxification and weight loss. While there is no scientific evidence to confirm the benefits and/or harm caused by colon cleansing, most critics say that such detoxification process is unnecessary, especially if for the purpose of losing weight.
Positive Effects of Colon Cleansing as a Diet
Because of the nature of the colon cleansing diet, bowel movement is regulated and the toxins in the body are excreted. Improved digestion and bowel movement seem to be benefits of colon cleansing as a diet.
Believers of the detox process claim there is a decreased susceptibility to colon cancer; significant weight loss, since stagnant fecal matter has been flushed away; a strengthened immune system because the body can now absorb nutrients more efficiently; and an improved mental outlook.
Negative Effects of Colon Cleansing as a Diet
Some who use the colon cleansing diet experience vomiting, dizziness and nausea, as well as bowel perforation and risk of disease or infection as some colon cleansing supplements are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
Nevertheless, colon health can be enhanced and weight loss can still be achieved using other health programs and by improving eating habits. Increasing fiber intake can help resolve gastrointestinal problems. Also, consume fruits and vegetables and replace white rice with whole grains or oatmeal. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day and engage in physical activities. By committing to a healthy lifestyle, you can clean your colon and lose excess fat without any risks.
