Easy Parade Float Ideas for Pick-Up Trucks

by Lynn Holmgren
  • Overview

Building a parade float doesn't have to be expensive. With a little brainstorming and planning you can turn the bed of a pick-up truck into a parade worthy specimen. Limit yourself to using inexpensive and recycled items for decoration. You might be surprised how a little bit can go a long way.
  • Before You Build

Before you begin building, make sure to read all of the information concerning the parade float rules. Contact the chairman of the parade to clarify any special safety requirements or rules. You don't want to go through all that hard work only to be disqualified.

  • Building Your Float

Come up with a theme and color plan that will convey your message in a fun and positive way. Draw the basic design for your float before you begin. You can always add on as you go. Start by laying down plywood in the bed of the truck as a base. Use balloons as a cheap accessory. Tape, tie or staple them in an archway over the truck's cab, or line the sides. Just make sure to secure them tightly so they don't fall off as you move. Use crepe paper to create a fringe curtain effect around the sides of the truck. Erect a pole in the center with streamers for a "maypole" effect. Tissue paper can be used to make large flowers and bows. Think big: Remember that you want everything to be seen from faraway. Tinsel, garlands or aluminum foil can add a shiny effect to your float. Use pop-culture references to catch people's attention. Have someone dress up as a popular celebrity or cartoon character. Have a boom-box or live music to keep the crowd on their feet.
