Easy Directions for Plant Hangers

Overview
A basic plant hanger can be made quickly and easily using twine, jute or macramé cord. Twine is probably the cheapest material, while macramé cord will be a little more expensive but more decorative. The size of the hanger can be varied to fit any size planter simply by adjusting the lengths of cord. Be sure that the material you choose for your hanger is sturdy enough to hold the weight of the potted plant, as it can become quite heavy when watered.
-
Determine the Length
Cut four lengths of cord at double the length you want your finished plant hanger to be, plus 6 inches. If you want a 3-foot hanger, cut four 6 1/2-foot lengths of cord. Fold the lengths in half so the folded edge becomes the top of the hanger. Tie a looped knot at the top, creating an approximately 1 1/2-inch loop for hanging. You now have eight cords hanging down from the loop at the top.
-
Make the First Set of Knots
Separate the eight cords into four sets of two cords. Holding one set of cords, tie a square knot 20 inches from the bottom of the cords. Repeat on each of the other three pairs. You will have created four knots, one in each set of two cords and all at the same distance from the bottom.
-
Make the Second Set of Knots
With the four sets of cords laid out in a row, picture the cords numbered one through eight from left to right, as if you are reading. Hold cord number two and cord number three in your hand. Tie these two cords in a square knot that lands halfway between the knot above it and the bottom fringe of the cords. Repeat with cords four and five, six and seven, and eight and one. After all cords are paired up and knotted, grasp all eight cords and tie a looped knot at the bottom of the hanging planter.
-
Optional Beads
If desired, you can dress up your plant hanger with beads. After making the first set of knots, slip a bead over each knot. When the cords are separated to make the second set of knots and the container is placed inside the hanger, the pulled-apart cords will hold the beads up and prevent them from slipping down.
