Drug Treatment

by Ezmeralda Lee
  • Overview

When someone becomes addicted to drugs of any kind, whether prescription or illegal, drug treatments are often necessary for the safety of the individual. There are several different kinds of drug treatment, and which kind is appropriate depends on the type of drug causing the addiction, and the severity of the addiction. It is possible for someone to be treated for drug addiction without ever going to a facility of any kind.
  • Features

There are several different kinds of drug treatments. One of the most well-known is residential treatment, wherein addicts stay at a resort-type location to be treated for drug addiction. Another kind of treatment for drugs is the 12-step program. These programs help drug addicts become addiction-free over time. Alternative, replacement drugs are also often used to cure drug addiction. There are also many kinds of alternative therapies; however, none of them have been proven to cure drug addiction.

  • Function

The purpose of drug treatment is to provide people who have addictions to drugs the ability to resume a normal lifestyle. It is important that drug addictions are treated, because when a person is addicted to a drug then it can take over her life and cause her to be altered or consumed by the desire to take the drugs. It is possible to be addicted to many different kinds of drugs, including over-the-counter medications, prescription medications, cigarettes and alcohol.
  • Time Frame

Recovering from drug addiction takes some time. Even the most minor addiction takes several weeks to get completely removed from the body. When a person is taken to a drug treatment center, it is usually the fastest and most effective way to regain control. The 12 step programs take different amounts of time for different people. If a person decides to eliminate all drug influence from his life at once, then it is possible that he will recover sooner than someone who takes it more slowly.
  • Benefits

There are many benefits to receiving drug treatment. Drug addicts usually have a hard time interacting with the rest of society because of their addiction to a substance. This takes away from interactions with other people, as well as from relationships. When that addiction is broken, then the damaged relationships can be restored. Recovering from an addiction can also improve a person's financial situation. Stopping a drug addiction can help the person who was addicted because his health will improve, his life will improve and his career will improve.
  • Prevention/Solution

It is fairly easy to avoid drug treatment. The best way to avoid it is to never become addicted to any drug at all. When taking prescription medications, you should take only the recommended dose. Never drink more alcohol than you can handle. Don't smoke heavily or do any illegal drugs. If all of these guidelines are followed, then it is likely that you will avoid ever having to be treated for drug addiction.
