How to Dress Like the Evil Old Witch in Snow White
by Anna Winden
-
Overview
Making a costume for the Evil Old Witch in Snow White is not a difficult task, and it's a Halloween costume that you're less likely to find duplicated at your party. It takes a bit of sewing skills to pull of these steps but you'll be able to brag about spending an afternoon making your costume while everyone else's is store bought.
-
Creating the Robes
-
Get yourself an old black dress, one that is long and flowing. Make sure it's nothing fancy or that you want to keep, as we'll be altering it. Thrift stores are excellent for this.
-
Cut the sleeves off of the dress, if it has them.
-
With the black and purple fabric layered together, cut a long trapezoid from both fabrics. The base should be the bottom two corners of the fabric, while the top of the trapezoid should be the fabrics' respective top. The top should only be as long as you can comfortably wrap the fabric around your upper arm or shoulder and still have it somewhat loose, so do some experimenting, and remember to leave extra room for sewing them together: a half inch is normally good. You're trying to achieve the flowing sleeve appearance.
-
Place the purple and black trapezoidal fabrics with the outside together facing each other and top sew them together. Leave the space open at the top of the trapezoid.
-
Flip them inside out and sew together the open portion of the fabric. Iron this new sewn piece of fabric if it feels too poofy.
-
Step 6
Sew together the sides of the trapezoid so you create a conical shape, with the purple on the outside.
-
Step 7
Flip it inside out, so the black shows and the sewing is on the inside.
-
Step 8
Sew this sleeve to your dress, and repeat these steps for the other sleeve.
-
Step 9
Cut the hood from the sweatshirt and attach it to the back of the dress's neck, and you'll have a hood for your robes. The hood should be very close to the same shade of black as the dress and sleeves.
Preparing Your Apperance
-
Color in around your eyes large, deep grey circles. Pencil in thick, dark eyebrows that start at your nose bridge and arch sharply up.
-
Color your face lightly to make it look older and grey.
-
Apply sharp, plastic nails. If they don't shine, use some polish or clear glossy strengthener enamel on them.
-
Put on your wig. It should be tangled, white and straight like an old hag.
-
Put on your dress and your shoes, and adjust your hood over your face. Get your basket of apples and you're all set.

- Hunch over a little bit and fake a cough to make yourself seem more genuine.
You can spray the apples with hairspray to give them an extra shine. Don't eat these, though!
If you're going to a party with children, you may consider carrying caramel apples to hand out, but ask parents first.
