Overview
Whether you are able to donate money, furniture, clothing or time to a non-profit organization, your contribution can make a big difference. The key to donating to a non-profit organization is to research the cause that you are passionate about and find a charity that supports it. There are many local and national organizations that need your help, especially during times of economic difficulty.

Step 1
Decide what you can donate. Some organizations may only want cash donations. while others will take things everything from furniture to kitchen appliances to clothing.
-
Step 2
Research the non-profit organizations in your community. If there is a specific cause that you are passionate about, check into local and national organizations. Look for information about the specific type of work they do and how your contribution will be used.
-
Step 3
Create a plan. If you are donating cash, you may not want to do it all at once. Decide how much money you can afford to donate over the course of the year and the size of the installments.
-
Step 4
Check the organization's website to find out how they prefer donations. Many modern non-profit organizations have places where you can donate on their website. You will typically need either a credit card or a PayPal account to donate online. However, you can mail a check to a physical address if you prefer.
-
Step 5
Call the non-profit if you are donating furniture or other physical goods. Many organizations will come to your home to pick up large donations. Others might have donation centers where you can drop off your goods.
-
Step 6
Keep track of your donations, and ask for receipts from the organization. Donating to a non-profit organization has the added benefit of being tax deductible. File receipts and documentation with your tax paperwork for next year.
