4A domestic partnership is a union that allows two people to share property, insurance benefits and support obligations. It is a common way that same sex couples and opposite sex couples age 62 and over can share some of the benefits of marriage. However, there are some key differences between the benefits of marriage and the benefits of a civil union. A civil union is not recognized by other states, cannot be used for immigration sponsorship and does not have the same tax benefits as marriage.
