Distance learning and online courses of study are ideal for working professionals who wish to continue their college-level studies or obtain a second degree. Since most on-campus courses are geared toward the 18- to 22-year-old set and scheduled during daytime hours, scheduling becomes an immediate issue for those who work in the day or late afternoon. Indiana University offers a number of distance learning options.
  • Degree Programs

Students can earn a degree from Indiana University entirely online or take courses to enhance a degree they already have. Online degrees available include Associate of Science, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, Master of Science and Master of Business Administration. Other common degree paths result in a Bachelor of General Studies or an Associate of Applied General Study.

  • Concentrations Offered

I.U. offers courses in a wide variety of subjects and degree concentrations, including business, criminal justice, history, economics, geology, journalism, philosophy, political science, English, sociology and psychology. Study with concentration in any one of the many subjects can result in a full degree.
  • Certificate Programs

Indiana University Online makes it easy to earn a certificate to enhance professional development in many career fields. For example, one program results in a certificate in learning to assess the value of a business. Others include setting up an e-commerce component for businesses, travel planning and technical writing. Requirements vary markedly for the different certificates.
  • Tuition

As of spring 2010, tuition for undergraduate courses was $163 per credit hour for Indiana residents and $197 per credit hour for out-of-state students. All tuition and fees must be paid in full immediately upon registration. Various other fees apply for late registration and extension of time for payment. The cost of required textbooks is not included in tuition fees.
  • Considerations

For those who aren't sure whether distance learning will work for them, Indiana University offers a one-month course they can try for free. The course subject matter centers on the distance learning concept and how students can make it a worthwhile experience. Taking this course will give students a taste of online learning and prepare them for what to expect.
