Different Forms of Drug and Alcohol Rehab

by Anna Dyer
  • Overview

Rehab, or drug and alcohol rehabilitation, is a term used to describe the psychotherapeutic and/or medical treatment for chemical dependency on substances such as alcohol, prescription drugs and "street" drugs like marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamines, opiates and more.
  • Outpatient Rehab

Outpatient treatment is structured so the patient is free to continue daily life and activities while attending group counseling sessions at regularly scheduled times.

  • Inpatient Rehab

Inpatient rehabilitation centers are live-in facilities where the patients can be constantly monitored by professional staff. Participation in regular daily activities is limited, if allowed at all.
  • Individual Rehab

Many mental health and addictions specialists offer individual counseling for drug and alcohol rehabilitation. This is a good option for those who prefer to receive treatment on a private basis, or for those who seek additional counseling in addition to other forms of rehabilitation.
  • Juvenile Rehab

Juvenile rehabilitation can take place in an inpatient or outpatient setting, or can be administered through individual counseling sessions. Juvenile rehabilitation often encourages the involvement of parents and/or close family members.
  • Correctional Rehab

Correctional drug and alcohol rehabilitation may be administered inside a correctional institution or outside the institution after release. Correctional rehabilitation is often court mandated as a part of sentencing, parole or probation.
