How to Design a Jewelry Case

by Rose Brown
  • Overview

Jewelry lovers know that a collection of jewelry can grow quickly. As the quantity of your beautiful adornments increases, so does the necessity for a safe place in which you can keep them organized, untangled and protected from dust. A good jewelry case can be as indispensible as the beautiful treasures it contains. It can be difficult, however, to find a jewelry case that meets all of your needs. Making one yourself is sometimes the best option. Before doing so, however, you must develop an appropriate design. These guidelines will explain how to design a jewelry case.
  • Designing a Jewelry Case

  • Step 1

Take stock of all your jewelry. Determine how much of each type of jewelry you have. Count the number of necklaces, earrings, bracelets, anklets, brooches and other items in your collection.
  • Step 2

Determine which jewelry you want to hang, such as necklaces, and which you want to store in drawers. Keep in mind that not all necklaces may need to be hung; the sturdier, chunkier pieces can be stored in drawers, while the fine, delicate strands should be suspended.
  • Step 3

Decide how many separate drawers you want your jewelry case to have. For example, you might need two drawers for necklaces, two for bracelets, and four for earrings.
  • Step 4

Establish how many individual hooks for suspending necklaces you want your case to feature. Keep in mind that you might hang two or three necklaces on each hook.
  • Step 5

Figure out how protected you want your case to be. Do you want it to open and close like a cabinet, with all the drawers and hooks hidden inside? Do you want to place the hooks outside, so the necklaces are readily accessible?
  • Step 6

Choose a material with which to make your case. Keep in mind that wood is affordable, easy to cut, and lends itself well to painting and finishing. You can also buy unfinished wood organizers with drawers, which can easily be converted into a jewelry case.
  • Step 7

Consider which material you would like to line the inside of the drawers with. Felt and velvet are good options because they are soft on jewelry and pleasing to the touch.
  • Step 8

Use a pencil and paper to draw a picture of the case you have in mind, including all the drawers and hooks you want, and noting where you want them. Make note of the supplies you will need, such as wood, hinges, fabric, glue, hooks, paint, and lacquer.
