How to Design a Blog on a Web Page

by JoshGilmore1
  • Overview

If you are creating a new website, having a blog allows for social interaction between you and your visitors. Using a blogging platform called WordPress, you can create static web pages as well as blogging pages. WordPress allows you to "theme" your blog, meaning you can install prebuilt themes or design new themes. You don't need advanced Web design knowledge to use WordPress. However, some stages might be more difficult for beginners. This tutorial assumes you already have a domain name and PHP-compatible hosting through GoDaddy, but have not yet created any Web pages.
  • Instructions

  • Step 1

Log in to your GoDaddy account and click "Hosting" under "My Account."
  • Step 2

Click on "Hosting Accounts" from the list, followed by "Manage Account" beside the domain name where you would like WordPress to be installed.
  • Step 3

Click on the "Your Applications" button. Click "Blogs" in the left sidebar, followed by "WordPress."
  • Step 4

Click the "Install Now" button on the WordPress page and follow the on-screen instructions to install WordPress. You will decide where the WordPress files will be stored, along with your desired login name and password. If you are unsure about a step, simply use the default setting. GoDaddy will e-mail you when the installation is complete, or you can visit your domain name to check on its progress.
  • Step 5

Visit your site. If your new blog is live, click "login" under "meta links," found in the sidebar on the bottom right. Use the username and password you used during setup.
  • Step 6

Click on "Appearance" once you log in to the WordPress interface. Then click on "Add New Themes."
  • Step 7

Search through the available themes. When you find a theme you like, click "Install" and "Install Now."
  • Step 8

Click on "Appearance" and "Themes." You should see your newly installed theme, along with the two default WordPress themes. If you do not like your new theme, you can reactivate one of the default themes, or repeat these steps to install a new one.
  • Step 9

Edit parts of the theme, if you want, using the "Editor" section under "Appearance." Be careful when editing these files. It could cause errors on your site if you delete important PHP code. Colors, fonts, and other general styling can be edited in the "style.css" file. You should have general knowledge of CSS to edit this file. Click "Update" when you are done editing the file and review your changes by visiting your Web page.
  • Step 10

Try writing your first blog post by going to "Posts" and "Add New." Write a subject line and content in the body. When you are content with your writing, click "Publish" in the top right. See how your new, stylish blog looks in action by visiting your site.
