What Is the Definition of a Compost Pile?

by Phil Silverwitz
  • Overview

A compost pile is a mixed heap of organic household material that can be used to fertilize soil. Because compost piles are easy to create and are naturally maintained, they continue to be popular in most home gardens.
  • Purpose

Compost can provide needed nutrients for the soil used in gardens. The microorganisms typically found in compost aid decomposition and supply nutrients that the soil needs to sustain healthy plants.

  • Compost materials

Food and organic waste, such as cow manure, fruits and vegetables, coffee grounds, leaves, and wood chips, are a great choice for your compost pile.
  • Non-compost material

Items such as dairy products, meat bones and oils typically attract pests. Non-biodegradable items like cardboard, plastic and paper don't work well either.
  • Process

The decaying of compost begins when bacteria and fungi decompose and break down the organic material using enzymes. This decomposition provides the ingredients necessary for stable soil.
  • Types

Many variations of compost piles exist, including container composting, trench composting, field composting and worm composting.
