How to Decorate Around Coat Hooks

by Carole Vansickle
  • Overview

If you do not like the spare look of coat hooks on your wall, but love the convenience of them, then decorating around coat hooks is the ideal way to combine art and efficiency. While there are many decorative coat hook styles available, you may prefer to make your own designs. This will enable you to customize any coat hook in your home with beautiful designs.

  • Step 1

Sand down the pieces of wood. Make sure that the edges and the sides are all smooth to the touch. This will make them more visually attractive and easier to paint.
  • Step 2

Paint the pieces of wood. You can cover them with one color, or paint a design. Just remember that the back of the coat hook will cover up part of the design, so keep that in mind when you are painting. The paint will need to dry completely before you move on, so allow 2 to 4 hours for this once you have finished painting.
  • Step 3

Screw the coat hooks onto the pieces of wood. Generally, people prefer to center them. However, you may like a more eclectic look and attach them in a corner or off-center.
  • Step 4

Accessorize the coat hook. Use the art accessories and the hot glue gun to accent your painted design. Remember that you need the coat hook to be serviceable, so do not let flowers or other items get in the way of the hook itself. Most accessories should be placed around the edge of the wood, not immediately next to the coat hook. As with the paint, you should allow 2 to 4 hours for the glue to set completely before moving on.
  • Step 5

Attach your completed coat hook decorations to the wall. Since you are potentially going to hang heavy items on the coat hook, it makes sense to attach it to a stud. Use the stud finder to find a stud. Stud finders usually move or flash when you pass them over a stud when they are pressed against the wall. Once you have found the stud, drill or nail your coat hook pieces to the wall.
