How to Find a Dalmatian Puppy

by Camille Nesler
  • Overview

The breed of dog known as the Dalmatian is very popular as a family pet and is characterized by the animal's short, white fur and black spots. They are known to be very happy animals who are full of energy and enjoy playing with children. However, if the Dalmatian does not receive enough physical exercise they can become hyper and high-strung and may be destructive or too rambunctious for a small child to play with. Dalmatians are easily trainable and can also be used as watchdogs. They are very active dogs and are not recommended for individuals who live in apartments unless they can be taken on walks several times a day.
  • How to find a Dalmation puppy

  • Step 1

Search sources such as your local phone book, newspaper classifieds and the Internet to find Dalmatian breeders in your area. Often times these individuals will have websites which not only provide information on available puppies but also on topics such as training, grooming options, health history and the pedigree of the parents. You can find contact information on the Internet as well as in phone books and newspapers. Schedule times to meet with breeders so you can see first-hand where the puppies were born and raised and discuss prices. You can also look at the website for the American Kennel Club. This organization has a vast amount of information on all breeds of dogs as well as classified listings of breeders and available puppies.
  • Step 2

Visit your local veterinarian office. These professionals may be able to provide you with a list of breeders. They may also be willing to contact any of their customers who have Dalmatian dogs to see if they have available puppies or have the contact information from where they purchased their own pet. You may also be allowed to post fliers in the waiting room with your contact information and a description of the type of puppy you are looking for.
  • Step 3

Calling your local fire department or volunteer fire department is another way you may be able to find a Dalmatian puppy. This breed of dog is famous for being the "mascot" of firehouses. Often times the dog will live at the fire-station and ride on the truck with the firemen. They may be able to provide information regarding where they purchased their dog or may even have available puppies on occasion.
  • Step 4

Pay a visit to you local animal shelter. Sometimes even pure-bred dogs such as Dalmatians will be placed in shelters when the owners move or are no longer able to care for the animal. These organizations will also have contact information on rescue agencies such as the Dalmatian Rescue of North Miami Beach. Most states have similar rescue agencies which are breed-specific and the animals can be adopted for small fees. Dogs and puppies in these types of facilities have usually been examined by a veterinarian, have updated vaccinations and have been spayed or neutered.
