Dachshund Dog Treat Recipe

by Ruth Amick
  • Overview

Making your own dog treats for your dachshund means that you get to choose what ingredients go into the goodies-and your dog. You may want to provide your dog with a healthier alternative to commercial dog treats, or perhaps you just enjoy baking. Either way, your pet should love your efforts.
  • Main Flavors

If your dachshund enjoys peanut butter, consider making an easy peanut treat recipe. Cheese is another favorite among many dogs and is often paired with a little garlic powder. Some owners want to help freshen their dog's breath, and like to use mint or parsley in the dog treats. You probably know what your dog's favorite flavors are from experience with store-bought products.

  • Recipe Finder

You can find inspiration for your doxie treat recipe by finding a dog treat cookbook at your local bookstore, or you may want to explore the many dog websites that provide wholesome recipes for treats. You can add or subtract flavor ingredients in order to make your own creation, but stick close to measurements of flour and liquids. For websites with recipe ideas, see Resources.
  • Peanut Butter Recipe

One easy recipe for dog treats from Good Dog Express: 2-1/4 cups whole wheat flour 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1-1/4 tbsp baking powder 1 cup milk 1-1/4 cups peanut butter In a large bowl, combine the flour and baking powder. Spoon peanut butter into a separate, medium-sized bowl and gradually pour in milk, stirring until blended. Add the peanut mixture to the combined flour and baking powder. Using a large wooden spoon (or your fingers, if you don't mind the stickiness), slowly mix until a dough ball is formed. Roll out the dough on a flat, floured surface to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut into shapes with a cookie cutter. Bake on a parchment-paper lined cookie sheet at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. Let the biscuits cool before serving.
  • Cheese Treat

Cheese treats can be made with the following: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 tsp garlic powder 1-1/4 cups cheddar cheese 5 tbsp water Place all the ingredients except the water into a food processor. Pulse until the mixture has the appearance of coarse meal. Turn the processor to "On" and gradually add the water until the mixture forms the consistency needed for a dough ball. Roll out the dough on a flat, floured surface to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut into shapes with a cookie cutter. Bake on a parchment-paper lined cookie sheet at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. Let the treats cool before serving.
  • Special Considerations

There are some foods that should never be included in your dog's diet. Chocolate, onions and onion powder, macadamia nuts, grapes and raisins, persimmons and mushrooms are among the worst. A small amount of garlic is acceptable. For a full list of foods to avoid, see Resources. Some dogs are sensitive to milk, but you can substitute a lactose-free product.
