How to Create a Website to Sell Items
by Jimmy Boyd
-
Overview
A website can function just like a brick-and-mortar store. Website owners place product information on their websites. They can then sell items by incorporating e-commerce solutions. Setting up a website to sell items may seem difficult to aspiring web entrepreneurs. However, many online tools and payment-processing services exist to create a website, find items to sell, and process payments from website customers. The website owner who utilizes all these tools can post items online and automatically collect payments for each sale.

Step 1
Buy a domain name for the website and web hosting to store and display the site. Use a domain registrar to buy a domain. Try to choose a name that is related to the items to be sold on the website. Use a directory of hosting services to compare web hosts. Choose a hosting company and follow the host's instructions to connect the domain to the hosting account.
-
Step 2
Download a free website template. Start with this template each time you create a new web page. However, find a web designer if you have the money and want to pay for a customized design. Search for "web designer" in any search engine when looking for a designer.
-
Step 3
Find and sell items of other companies by using an affiliate program directory. An affiliate program pays a commission when a visitor clicks on a link or banner on your website and buys the affiliate product. Get HTML link codes from the individual affiliate programs.
-
Step 4
Register with PayPal if selling your own items. PayPal provides order buttons and payment processing for sales made by website visitors. Create buttons in the "Merchant Services" area of your account control panel. PayPal displays the HTML button code after button creation.
-
Step 5
Download the free NVU external web editor. Click "New" after downloading to start a new file for your home page. Click "Source" and delete the default HTML. Take the HTML for the web template and paste it into the box. Click "Save As" and use the word "index" to save this file as your website home page.
-
Step 6
Click "Normal" and replace the default text in the template to the desired text for the home page and commercial items. Use the "Link" button to create hyperlinks and the "Image" button to add images. Click on "Insert" and then "HTML" in the drop-down menu to paste the affiliate program or PayPal HTML.
-
Step 7
Use the FileZilla FTP client to upload the home page and any additional pages to the website. Download the software and connect to the website by entering the domain name, username and password. Select the "public_html" folder in the right window. Find the "index" file on your computer by searching in the left window. Right click and select "Upload" to transfer the file to the website. Repeat the same process for each web page.

- Add additional pages dedicated to each item. Use the same template to write a review or article that is specific to that particular commercial product. Provide the order link or button at the bottom of the page.

- Carefully read the terms of any affiliate program. Some programs have a minimum payout. Home-based marketers who make a small number of sales may have a problem reaching the minimum payout amount.
