How to Create Website Lessons

by Ashan R. Hampton
  • Overview

Typically, educators create lesson plans for classroom instruction and post them to the Internet for easy student access or as part of a repository of educational resources for fellow colleagues. In either case, website lessons are usually written by professional trainers, teachers or instructional designers. According to Instructional Design.org, "Instructional designers often use technology and multimedia as tools to enhance instruction." However, creating lessons to post to the Internet is not just for educators. With the rising popularity of blogging, anyone with a little knowledge of any subject can develop tutorials or lessons to post and share on a website.

  • Step 1

Decide on a subject to teach or share information about. Research the subject in the library or on the Internet to get a clear understanding of the material before attempting to write the lesson plan.
  • Step 2

Gather all necessary articles, books or other resources that will be used to write the lesson content. Choose quotes or passages from these resources that will increase the reader's understanding of the subject matter.
  • Step 3

Create an outline of the lesson from beginning to end. Organize the content in the lesson outline chronologically or from most important to least important information, depending on the kind of lesson being developed.
  • Step 4

Write the lesson in small chunks or short paragraphs to improve readability and comprehension.
  • Step 5

Decide where to include pictures, videos or other multimedia elements to visually enhance the presentation of the lesson on the Internet.
  • Step 6

For educational lessons like Female Poets of the 20th Century, log on to Moodle.org to create an account. Copy and paste the lesson content into modules that will be posted to the internet.
  • Step 7

For lessons on all other subjects, arrange the content in an attractive website template or blog page and publish to the Internet via an FTP web hosting account or the service provider's content management system.
