How to Create a Sleep Desktop Icon for Vista 64

    Windows desktop icons are shortcuts that point to other locations on the hard drive. This can be a program, an operating system function, a file or a folder. Using desktop shortcuts, you can trigger the sleep function in any Windows operating system including Vista 64. The Windows operating system has a wizard that helps guide you through the shortcut creation process. Using this wizard, you can create a sleep shortcut icon quickly.
 
  • Step 1

    Right-click the Windows desktop. Select "New" from the menu that displays. From this menu, select "Shortcut." This starts the wizard that guides you through the process.
  • Step 2

    Enter "Rundll32.exe Powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep" into the text box labeled "Type the location of the item." This executable is an internal function in the Windows operating system.
  • Step 3

    Click the "Next" button. The next text box is populated with "Rundll32." Delete this text and give it a friendly name that you recognize. Click the "Finish" button.
  • Step 4

    Double-click the newly created icon on the desktop to test it. The computer is instantly set to "Sleep" mode.
