How to Create Your Ideal Birth Experience
-
Overview
What many women don't know about childbirth is that it can be a positive, enjoyable experience. Educating yourself, talking to your partner and doctor, writing a birth plan and practicing mental and physical strengthening techniques can all help achieve a satisfying childbirth. Through research and preparation, you can profoundly enhance the experience of bringing a new life into the world.

Step 1
Research. Gather information from books, articles and videos. Ask friends who have children about their experiences. Look up hospitals, birthing centers, midwives, doulas and labor coaches. The more educated you are, the less fearful you'll be.
-
Step 2
Talk to your partner. Discuss what fears you have, how he can help you prepare emotionally and physically, and the execution plan for various scenarios on delivery day.
-
Step 3
Consult your doctor. Ask about pain management as well as medical intervention procedures. Know the facts about induction, Pitocin, epidurals, episiotomies, forceps and vacuum extraction, caesarean sections and circumcision.
-
Step 4
Draft a birth plan. Do you want pain relief or a natural delivery? Do you want to circumcise? Do you want music or special lighting? Do you want any support staff besides your partner? Plan out the specifics in advance.
-
Step 5
Practice and prepare. Sign up for classes on childbirth as well as postpartum care. Practice different visualization, meditation and breathing techniques. Exercise to strengthen your muscles and prepare your body.
-
Step 6
Voice your needs. Your comfort during labor is first priority. If you need pain relief, say it. If a hospital staffer is hindering your concentration, ask for a rotation. If you don't want to be touched during contractions, let your team know.
-
Step 7
Be flexible. Know that anything can change at a moment's notice. It is important to maintain flexibility and a positive attitude.
