How to Create a Business Web Page

by Michael McCann
  • Overview

Before the turn of the century, creating a business Web page, with a short Web address printed on your business card, was a status symbol for a businessperson. Before the new millennium, Google was in infancy, and there were no social marketing companies like Facebook or LinkedIn. At the beginning of the Internet, conducting e-commerce was very expensive for the typical businessperson. Today, there are search functions and social marketing and photo-sharing sites to "connect" businesses worldwide.

  • Step 1

Select a Web address (domain name) for your website. This URL (universal resource locator) will be the foundation for building extension pages of the homepage. Research Web hosts and contact customers of prospective hosts to confirm reliability. A business Web page that does not appear on the Internet because a host's server is not operating does little to instill confidence in a potential customer.
  • Step 2

Double-check the grammar and spelling of your content to make the visitor's experience pleasant. Well-written content on a business Web page helps visitors learn and prompts them to buy products and services. Many content websites offer advice for businesspeople wanting to populate their Web pages with high-quality content. Place keywords relevant to your business that bring visitors to your specific business Web page. Free resources to evaluate keyword effectiveness are available on the Internet.
  • Step 3

Provide a clear and easy navigational structure that is easy to use. Visitors need to find information on a business Web page easily and quickly or they will leave. You may want to avoid complex JavaScript menus that drop down and other difficult menus.
  • Step 4

Insert formatting tags on your business Web page. Start your page with: <!DOCTYPE Doctype goes here> <html xmlns=http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml> The title that you insert between the tags <title>...</title> will appear at the top of the browser when the page is viewed. The title should be the same as the heading at the top of the business Web page.
  • Step 5

Learn XHTML language and tags. Creating a business Web page involves writing in XHTML (extensible hypertext markup language) and is simple to learn because Web pages are simply plain text with XHTML code added for visual and functional effect.
  • Step 6

Place key product and service-related information on the homepage. Many businesspeople insert fancy graphics and "About Us" items on their homepage. Visitors will often seek out information about the company or personnel after they determine whether the business provides the goods and services they seek. Place this information on the homepage.
  • Step 7

Place contact information on the homepage (and every other page). Many businesspeople place their contact information only on their "Contact Us" page. Make it easy for visitors to see a name, address (street address, no postal boxes) and phone numbers. Visitors want to know where a business is and how they can quickly contact the business.
  • Step 8

Periodically check hyperlinks you provide to other websites to make sure they're still working. A business Web page with working links instills confidence in the mind of a visitor.
