Country Cottage Decorating Tips

by Louie Doverspike
  • Overview

Cottage escapes are popular alternatives to flashy beach houses or Aspen ski lodges. They represent a more toned down relaxation and often indulge our nostalgia for the "good ol' days." Usually found in rural or semi-rural areas, a well-appointed cottage can soothe the soul and take away the stresses of urban and suburban life. Of course, a cottage doesn't become the perfect retreat by itself. It takes some keen decorating sense and an eye for the rustic to create the desired rural feel.
  • Wear and Tear

Part of what is so valued about country cottages is the feeling of human habitation and use. As such, furniture should be selected to look worn and aged, but not outdated. Avoid shiny counter tops or polished wood. Instead, think untreated surfaces and faded colors. A country cottage is a good place to furnish with carefully selected flea market furniture. You can even artificially age sheets and bedding by soaking them in a weak tea brew.

  • Quilts

Nothing speaks to the cottage aesthetic more strongly than quilts. Use colorful pastel quilts to accent any item of furniture. Not only are quilts colorful additions to decor, but they emphasize the old-fashioned comfort so central to our idea of the country cottage.
  • Dried Flowers and Herbs

The image of herbs on the counter or along windows evokes the idyllic forms of nature that people expect of a cottage. Dry and press flowers and herbs for accents around picture frames and mirrors. Gather dry twigs and other simple woods as a rustic alternative to a flower bouquet or centerpiece.
