How to Cook With Peanut Sauce
by Marie Price
-
Overview
Peanut sauce is a thick, fragrant and creamy sauce that is popular in African and Asian cuisines. Recipes for peanut sauce vary from region to region. Ingredients you might find include peanuts or peanut butter, soy sauce, onions and garlic. Some versions might also have curry paste, fish sauce or coconut milk. Peanut sauce is quite versatile and can be used in a variety of dishes.
-
Make the Peanut Sauce
-
Combine the peanut butter, soy sauce, brown sugar, lime juice and water in a mixing bowl. Beat thoroughly with a whisk until all the ingredients are incorporated.
-
Pour the mixture into a small saucepan over low heat. Add the red chili flakes and crushed garlic.
-
Stir the peanut sauce continuously until it begins to bubble, and then remove from the heat. Add some more water if the sauce is too thick for your liking.
-
Store the peanut sauce in a covered container in the fridge if you don't plan on using it right away. Use the sauce within three weeks.
Make a Noodle Dish
-
Cook the linguine as directed on the package in a large pot. Drain the noodles in a colander, and then return to the pot.
-
Add the sesame oil to the noodles until the noodles are evenly coated. Set the noodles aside.
-
Place the broccoli, peas and snow peas with 2 tbsp. of water in the saucepan. Cover the saucepan, and steam the vegetables over medium-high heat until the broccoli turns bright green.
-
Drain the vegetables in the colander, and pour them into the pot with the noodles. Add the peanut sauce, and mix it with the noodles and vegetables until combined. Garnish the noodles with the green onions.
Make a Salad
-
Toss the lettuce, cabbage, radishes and green onions together in a large bowl. Set the salad aside.
-
Heat the large skillet on medium-high. Add the canola oil. When the oil begins to smoke, season the shrimp with salt and pepper and toss them into the skillet.
-
Cook the shrimp for two minutes, or until they begin to curl and turn opaque.
-
Toss the shrimp with the salad. Pour the peanut sauce over the salad, and gently mix to combine.

- Peanut sauce should be added to meals or used as a dip. Once the sauce is made, do not cook it over direct heat, because it burns easily.
