Video data can be stored in many different file formats. One common file format is WMV, which stands for "Windows Media Video." These files are a proprietary file type created for and by the Windows operating system. MPEG files also contain video data. These files, however, are not created for a specific operating system. Instead, they are an open format that seeks to compress video data while maintaining the quality of the original file. You can convert WMV files into MPEG files using a free and easy-to-use website.

Step 1

Open your internet browser and navigate to media-convert.com. This free website will handle all kinds of conversions including WMV to MPEG.
Step 2

Add the WMV file you want to convert. To add a file, click the "Browse" button on the top left-hand corner of the site.
Step 3

Choose an output format by selecting "Mpeg 1 (.mpg)" from the output format drop-down menu. This menu is located about halfway down the site on the left-hand side.
Step 4

Click the "OK" button which is located to the right of the output drop-down menu. This will start converting the file. A progress meter will appear at this point in the process.
Step 5

Download the converted file from the link that appears on the website. This will store the converted file on your computer.
