How to Convert a Windows Media Video File Into Real Audio

Overview

You've created a home movie in windows media video format, and now you want to use the audio separately. Maybe you want to put it on your mp3 player, or maybe you want to add it to your music playlist. Converting to Real Audio is a little tricky, because RealPlayer is designed to convert for specific devices, and RealAudio is not the default format for any of the default devices. Even so, you can convert a windows media video file into real audio using only RealPlayer.

Step 1

Add the video to "My Library" in RealPlayer. Mouse over the video until a drop-down menu appears. Select "More," then "Convert to . . ." The RealPlayer Converter window will appear.
Step 2

Click the gray button under the "Convert to" heading. The "Select a Device" window will appear.
Step 3

Click "More Devices" in the bottom left corner of the new window. The "More Devices" window will appear.
Step 4

Click "Add Custom" in the bottom left corner. The "Add Custom Device Profile" will appear.
Step 5

Select the "Audio Only" option in the "Format" drop-down menu under "Video Details." Under "Audio Details," select "RealAudio 10" in the format drop-down menu. Click "OK." This will return you to the "More Devices" window. Click "OK" again, returning you to the "Select a Device" window.
Step 6

Select your custom device and then click "OK." You will return to the RealPlayer Converter window.
Step 7

Select the location where you want to save your file in the bar labeled "Save in." The most convenient place to save your file is probably the same directory as the original or "My Music." Click "Start" to begin the conversion. Your file may take a minute or so to convert. When it is finished, click "OK" and close the RealPlayer Converter window.
