Colds Vs. Allergies

by Contributing Writer
  • Overview

Colds and allergies often have similar symptoms, but there are important differences between them. Substances such as mold and pollen cause allergies, while viruses cause colds. If you have cold symptoms (such as sneezing, congestion and a runny nose) that last more than 2 weeks, you could be suffering from allergies. Most people get over a cold in 7 to 10 days, but allergies can last for weeks or months if not properly treated.
  • Prevention/Solution

Most people will recover from a cold in a few days with rest and over-the-counter drugs, but you may need to see a doctor to get proper treatment for your allergies.

  • Features

Runny nose, congestion, wheezing and itchy eyes are symptoms of both allergies and colds, but if you also have fever and body aches, you probably have a cold.
  • Duration

The main difference between colds and allergies is duration: Colds lasts for 7 to 10 days, but allergies will persist for as long as you are exposed to the allergen.
  • Misconceptions

Colds are transmitted from person to person by viruses, but allergies are not contagious since they are caused by airborne substances like pollen, mold and dust.
  • Warning

If left untreated, allergies can lead to more serious health problems like severe sinus infections and ear infections: See a doctor if your symptoms last more than a few weeks.
  • Expert Insight

Allergy shots (or immunotherapy) can be a very effective treatment for people whose allergies are severe or who experience symptoms year-round.
