How to Clean Treated Lumber
by Anthony Smith
-
Overview
Treated lumber, also known as pressure-treated lumber, is saturated with preservative chemicals when it is manufactured. These chemicals are great for preserving the wood and protecting it from the elements, but they also can make one pause and wonder how to go about cleaning the lumber. If you have a deck, fence or other structure made from treated lumber that needs cleaning, there is an effective method you can use.

-
Step 1
Purchase an oxygen bleach cleaning product such as Oxy Clean. Do not use a chlorine bleach product as it will leave the wood looking white or washed out.
-
Step 2
Mix a solution of warm water and oxygen bleach in a bucket according to the manufacturer's directions.
-
Step 3
Spread the oxygen bleach solution on the lumber using a mop if it is a horizontal surface such as a deck, or a rag for vertical surfaces such as fences.
-
Step 4
Scrub the surface of the wood using a stiff nylon brush, dipping it in the bucket to soak it with additional cleaner often.
-
Step 5
Rinse the wood with water and allow it to air dry.
