How to Clean/Sterilize Baby Furniture

by Andrea Buckner Schoenherr
  • Overview

As you lovingly prepare baby's nursery, a foremost concern is providing a safe environment for your loved one. Cleaning baby's furniture in a non-toxic, safe manner is an important part of such an environment. Providing baby with a clean environment takes little time and little money when you use simple, green cleaners. While you can purchase such cleaners, also consider these homemade versions. Baby will have a clean and sterile environment and will not be harmed by any chemicals.
  • Wood Furniture Cleaning

  • Step 1

Mix a few drops of lemon oil into one-half cup of warm water. Lemon,a strong food-acid, is effective in killing bacteria. Put into a spray bottle and mix well.
  • Step 2

Spray mixture onto a soft cloth. Make sure the cloth is only damp, because too much wetness can harm wood.
  • Step 3

    Wipe furniture with damp cloth.
  • Step 4

Use a dry soft cloth to give furniture a final wipe.
  • Step 5

    Dust baby's room weekly.
  • Upholstered Furniture Cleaning

    • Step 1

Regularly vacuum upholstered furniture to remove dust, hair and other particles. Make sure to get in folds and under cushions.
    • Step 2

Club soda can be used as a spot remover. Test a hidden spot of the fabric first.
    • Step 3

For a heavier cleaning, combine equal parts of dish soap with filtered water in a jar. Shake until the mixture is foamy. Test a hidden spot of the fabric first. Use a sponge to spread the mixture in a circular motion. Rinse with a clean cloth and water. Place a fan nearby to help air dry. Vacuum when completely dry.

    • Step 2

Keep and store this mixture to use as needed. It can also be used on glass around the house.
    • Step 3
