Overview
Spas and pools not only provide enjoyable time in the water, but can also add to the beauty of your home. In order for you to get the most out of your pool and spa both in use and in attractiveness, both should be cleaned frequently.
How to Clean a Pool and a Spa
-
Clean Pools and Spas Weekly
-
Step 1
Use a leaf skimmer. The first step in cleaning both pools and spas is to use the leaf skimmer tool. It removes debris, keeping the water clean and the circulation systems functioning properly. Use the skimmer every time you use the spa, and skim the pool at least weekly and also when you notice debris in the water.
-
Step 2
Vacuum your pool and spa weekly. Get a quality vacuum that either has it's own power supply. Use it so that you suck up all the dirt that has settled to the bottom of the pool and spa. You must also clean the vacuum filter after each use so that it cleans well the next time. Consider a spa wand if you need something smaller and more handy for use in spas.
-
Step 3
Clean the baskets out in your pool and spa. Do this a couple of times a week, more often if you have trees in the area that drop a lot of leaves. It is important to keep these clear of any type of debris so that the water is circulating properly.
-
Step 4
Drain the spa water and clean the surface inside of your spa regularly. Scrub off white calcium deposits and algae. Use stiff brushes for gunite or plaster spas and softer brushes for fiberglass spas. For tough deposits, use a 1/2 and 1/2 mix of muriatic acid and water, and scrub with a brush. Rinse thoroughly when done.
-
Step 5
Clean the walls of your pool weekly. You obviously do not drain the pool water as you do a spa, but use similar methods to clean the interior. Use a variety of brushes (listed in the things you'll need section above) to scrub off deposits, algae, and scum lines that have formed, and you will be enjoying clean, sparkling, water in your pool and spa.

- Be very careful and take all proper precautions when using muriatic acid. Wear safety goggles and gloves, and don't allow it to come in contact with your skin.
