How to Clean an Automatic Litter Box

by Kylie Keeler
  • Overview

While the purpose of an automatic litter box might be to cut down on your need to clean one, an occasional thorough cleaning will still be necessary. However, unlike traditional litter boxes that can simply be dumped and then hosed out, an automatic litter box requires more than a little work. Because of its machinery, you'll need to make a few preparations before beginning the cleaning process. Learn how to best clean your automatic litter box.

  • Step 1

Switch the on/off button into the off position and unplug from the electrical outlet. If your unit uses batteries, remove them as well.
  • Step 2

Pull on a pair of disposable latex or plastic gloves.
  • Step 3

Remove and dispose of the waste receptacle as usual.
  • Step 4

Detach the rake and set aside.
  • Step 5

Pull the top housing up and remove it from the bottom tray.
  • Step 6

Empty the used litter into the waste bag.
  • Step 7

Wipe down the empty litter tray with a few disposable cloths and water. If necessary, submerge the litter tray in soapy water and clean.
  • Step 8

Clean the mechanical housing by wiping off with a damp, disposable cloth.
  • Step 9

Using another damp, disposable cloth, clean the rake by wiping of the individual rakes.
  • Step 10

Reassemble the litter box once all components have fully dried.
