What Is a Class B RV?

by A.C. Bauer
  • Overview

A recreational vehicle (RV) is a great option for those who enjoy spending time outdoors but don't want to give up the creature comforts of home. If you are looking to rent or purchase an RV, it is important to understand the differences in size, weight, space and features. A Class B RV or motor home can be a great option for those looking for the experience of a large RV but with a smaller vehicle.
  • Identification

Class B RVs are built on a van chassis. They are often referred to as camping conversion vans because they often start off as a full-size van from one of the major manufacturers--GM, Ford or Dodge--and then have the RV interior and hardware installed.

  • Function

With their smaller size, Class B RVs can be used for recreational use but may also serve as a daily-use vehicle.
  • Advantages

Class B RVs are smaller, more compact and easier to drive and park than other RVs as they are generally the same size as a passenger van. They often achieve higher fuel-economy and contain many of the same features and amenities but on a smaller scale.
  • Disadvantages

According to Roadtrip America, when comparison shopping to similar-sized Class C or Class A, Class B RVs are often quite expensive for what you receive. The interior space and storage are limited, and they have less sleeping capacity than other small RVs or trailers.
  • Other Benefits

The smaller size of the Class B means it can be stored almost anywhere a van would be stored. They may also feature extended fiberglass tops that create additional interior space or fold-up tops that add headroom when parked.
