Christian Anxiety Treatment

by Angela Charles
  • Overview

Anxiety disorders affect approximately 40 million adults over the age of 18 in America each year. There are a variety of anxiety disorders including generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and specific phobias. Anxiety can affect anyone despite religious affiliation, although treatments may vary.
  • Bible Reading

The Bible states in the book of Philippians, verse 4:6, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Reading such verses can provide comfort to anxiety sufferers and encourage them to release their fears to God.

  • Prayer

Prayer and meditation often have calming effects on the body and soul. Taking some time out of the day to sit quietly before God can slow down breathing, relax muscle tension and increase well being.
  • Community

One of the emphases in the Christian Church is community. Having a group of people to rely on and get support from can be encouraging as individuals work through fears and anxiety.
  • Perspective

The focus in the Christian Church is on God rather than the self. This enables individuals to realize there are things that occur in life that are out of their control. However, God is the Creator of the universe and is in control of all things which brings peace to Christians.
  • Communication

In the biblical book of Ephesians, verse 4:26, it says "In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry." Christians are encouraged to communicate about their anger and work through their emotions which can help prevent anxiety and depression.
