- Consider the size of your dog. Smaller dogs can easily be secured in travel crates that fit in the back seat. The crate should be situated in such a way that it cannot move around in the event of an accident. Depending on the size of the crate, you may be able to accomplish this by reclining your seat until it presses against the crate. The inside of the crate should also have soft padding to further protect your pet.Buy a car harness for medium and larger dogs. The harness should fit around the dog's torso and then be adjusted for a snug fit. Most major pet supply retailers have a variety of harnesses intended for this purpose.
