Overview
Chickenpox is a common medical condition among children caused by the varicella zoster virus, and it is characterized by the widespread development of small pustules that are red and itchy. It is highly contagious among those that have yet to contract the virus, and although possible, the risk of developing into a serious or even fatal condition is quite low. Treatment is focused on bed rest and, in cases where the condition is severe or considered by your doctor to be high risk, anti-viral medication.

Symptoms
The symptoms of chicken pox typically develop in three stages. It begins as small bumps called papules that are either pink or red. Eventually they will become fluid-filled blisters known as vesicles, which will then become scabs. This may occur in definitive stages or all at the same time. The rash usually occurs on the torso, face and scalp, though it also occurs in the throat and the vagina. The rash might be accompanied by a fever, headache, abdominal pain, sore throat and an overall feeling of unwellness.

Treatment
The primary method of treatment for chicken pox is simple observation to ensure the condition does not develop serious complications. If your doctor concludes that you or your child is in a high-risk category susceptible to infection or complications, he might place you on anti-viral drugs such as acyclovir, which work by reducing the severity of the condition. If complications to occur, your doctor will determine the appropriate method of treatment.
Symptoms of chicken pox can be treated through a variety of lifestyle and at-home methods. Most important, do not scratch the pustules, as they could break, scar or become infected. Cool baths, especially one filled with colloidal oatmeal, can help alleviate itching, as can over-the-counter anti-itch lotion. Beyond this, headaches and body aches can be treated through over-the-counter pain killers such as ibuprofen. Bed rest and the consumption of plenty of fluids can help expedite recovery.
